RADIO DESERTION, 2023-2030, is an ongoing sound installation for several voices commenting, very briefly, from one to three minutes, their reading of our present. For this part of the work, the artist posed the following questions, the same for all participants, with no restrictions on the nature of their responses.
How can strategies of desertion be used today to disrupt contemporary forms of cultural and political hegemony? and, What does it mean to desert history itself?
The collection of these recordings, made by poets, activists, artists, curators, and academics, (in their original languages), ranging from personal stories to shared future possibilities, from current wars and genocides to imagined better futures, is played within a display, constructed from a thick layer of sticky black asphalt.
