/THE LAST SOCIALIST REALIST PAINTING

Socialist Realism was the dominant aesthetic method from the 1950s until the early 90s, when it was superseded by contemporary art, and specifically by Relational Esthetics, mobilized as political propaganda by Albania's government. The Last Socialist Realist Painting is a commission from renowned socialist era painter Zef Shoshi, meditating on the post '90s transition by depicting the new generation of Albanian cultural producers as having always already anticipated the continued instrumentalization of art for political purposes.
